(39) CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL NORMATIVE VERTICAL JUMP PERFORMANCE OF MALAYSIA WUSHU MARTIAL ARTS

Abstract Details: Vertical jump performance is a marker for athletic performance. Creation of normative data may allow practitioners to assess and compare their athlete’s performance to normative values and modulate their training accordingly. The purpose of this research was to develop and construct a national normative data for vertical jump performance on Wushu Martial Artists. METHODS: A total of 106 participants (female=48, male=67) participated in a series of countermovement jump (CMJ) test during the 2022 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) wushu event. This included athletes competing in different events: Changquan (n=56) , Nanquan (n=31), and Taijiquan (n=28). Two uniaxial force platforms (Hawkins Dynamic) were utilized. Normative jump data were constructed using z and T scores; the following scale was used to interpret scores: when T score was > 80 = 'Excellent', 80-71  = 'Very Good', 70-61  = 'Good',  60-55  = 'Above Average',  54-45  =  'Average', 44-40  = 'Below Average', 40-31  = 'Poor', 30-20  = 'Very Poor', < 20 = 'Extremely Poor'. A linear mixed effects model was conducted to identify differences across sex, age, and competition events. RESULTS: Descriptive data showed a mean and sd of 17.4 ± 2.76 and 18.1 ± 2.36 years of age for female and male athletes, respectively. A raincloud plot showed a normal distribution of vertical jump data by sex (Figure 1 A). Proposed normative jump data are displayed in Figures 1 B and C. Vertical jump height was 37.1 ± 4.8 cm and 49.4 ± 5.82 cm for female and male athletes, respectively. There was a significant difference in jump height across sex (male and female) (p< 0.01) and age (p=0.03), but not across competition events. CONCLUSION: There is a difference in jump height by sex but not by competitive event. Two normative vertical jump height scales are presented for each sex. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Practitioners and athletes from Malaysia can use the normative data as a reference tool to tailor their S&C training practices.
